By Patti Charek Biogen Idec Opens Incubator Biogen Idec has a cadre of talented scientists working feverishly to discover breakthrough drugs. Over the years, the Cambridge biotech has also made acquisitions, established a 5 million venture fund, and licensed promising technologies to build a pipeline of potential life-saving therapies. Now, Biogen Idec is trying a new approach: setting up an incubator to help biotech start-ups get off the ground by providing them with funding, technical expertise, and office and laboratory space near its Kendall Square headquarters. "We felt we needed to pursue another mechanism" to support early-stage companies, said Rainer Fuchs, executive director of the Biogen Idec Innovation Incubator. As the biotech revolution matures, Biogen Idec and other companies are trying to find creative ways to get in on the ground floor of promising research developed outside their laboratories. A few, like Biogen Idec, are setting up corporate incubators. Pfizer recently committed to spending up to million a year on a new biotech incubator in La Jolla, CA, near San Diego, and is considering setting up another incubator in MA or another biotech hot spot. In addition, Genzyme said it is considering stepping up investments in young companies or setting up an incubator of its own. Meanwhile, Fuchs said Biogen Idec hopes to house up to four or five companies in its biotech incubator within two years. But he said it's important to find good matches. He said the company sifted through more than 100 ideas before settling on Escoublac, founded by Columbia Medical Center professor Gerard Karsenty, who has found links between bone biology and metabolism. The company hopes to pioneer new treatments for patients suffering from type 2 diabetes and obesity, which have been on the increase in the US. Fuchs said Biogen Idec plans to give each company in its incubator between million and million in seed funding over several years, dedicated office and laboratory space, administrative support, and technical expertise. In return, Biogen Idec will receive stock in the companies and an option to eventually buy the rest at a prenegotiated price. Source: Todd Wallack, The Boston.
Diabetes is a major cause of kidney disease, called Diabetic Nephropathy. Your kidneys are important for filtering waste products from the body and eliminating these products through urine production. In severe kidney disease the kidneys may stop working, so a dialysis machine would be used as a replacement. As with all the complications of diabetes, the risk of diabetic nephropathy increases with poor diabetes control. High blood pressure will also increase your risk of Kidney Disease. Your blood pressure should be lower than 140 85. To reduce your risk of diabetic nephropathy kidney disease you can do the following: Reduce the salt intake in your diet Stop smoking Have your blood pressure checked regularly and take any medications prescribed on a regular basis Take your diabetes medication regularly.
TXB2 data not shown ; . As shown in Figure 6F, DU145 cells transfected with the TxS expression construct Echo 14 ; had a significantly higher motility than the control cells Control EtOH versus Echo14 EtOH, P 0.01 ; , suggesting that an increase in TxS expression enhances PCa cell migration. The increased motility in TxS transfected cells was abolished by SQ29548 Echo14 EtOH versus Echo14 SQ29548, P 0.001, Figure 6F ; , further confirming a role for TXA2 in modulating prostate cancer cell motility.

| What is celexa medication forBottom Line Problems Related to Injury Mechanical pain dysfunction of all three spinal regions mild High level of perceived disability, symptom behavior, and inconsistent effort are present. Ms. Booth reached a sedentary to light material handling level with testing, however, did not reach objective end points. It is therefore difficult to determine accurately her disability for house and yard, recreation and activities of daily living. She has extensive fear of re-injury, depression, suicidal ideation, anger and frustration. Some of this is related to injury and some to the perception of poor management by the insurer. Pain management and mood management are critical. Problems Likely Related to Injury Exacerbation of pre-existing left shoulder and upper back discomfort. Development of depression related to ongoing pain and decreased function. Problems Unrelated to Injury Asthma presently under good control. History of bulimia chronic pain syndrome which had been managed to some degree before the present accident. Multiple previous operations for endometriosis. Previous severe injuries in 1972 and 1974 resulting in disability for physical and psychosocial reasons. Chronic left shoulder pain requiring excision of the distal clavicle in 1999. Safety Issues There are no concerns regarding cardiorespiratory contraindications to active rehabilitation as her asthma appears to be under good control. This requires monitoring however. Opinions and Recommendations Medical: Ms. Booth continues to have significant myofascial pain that may benefit from a low dose tricyclic anti-depressant such as Nortriptyline 10 to 50 mg at h.s. If she could tolerate the side effects, this may be beneficial for pain levels and improve her poor sleep. Unfortunately, she was not able to tolerate Xelexa due to side effects. She did state in the past she was able to take Prozac for approximately six months and other than very dry mouth she was able to tolerate the medication. If ongoing depression is occurring, Prozac could be considered as an alternative to Celexa. She needs further reassurance that there are no sinister underlying features in her current presentation. She did express concern as to whether an MRI obtained out of province would be a good idea and reassurance was given this would not be helpful. Dr. Large continues to monitor her other medical conditions including asthma, hypothyroidism and menopause. Biomechanical: Ms. Booth should undergo a short course of biomechanical restoration to the impaired areas of the thoracic, cervical and lumbar spine. It should be noted this should not be the mainstay of the rehabilitation program as the findings are very mild. Conditioning: Regional Conditioning Required: Yes Global Strength Conditioning Required: Yes Functional Conditioning Required: Yes Return to Function: Ms. Booth should be encouraged to return to her pre-injury activities on a gradual scale.

Sheri H. Mecklenburg, JD * , Chicago Police Department, 3510 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60653 After attending this presentation, attendees will learn how the science of eyewitness identification applied to the first field study of those principals on eyewitness identification. Researchers, policy makers, and the criminal justice system have long debated the value of eyewitness identification and how to make such identifications more reliable. Researchers believed that the solution was here, found in the academic research. In the first field study to test these principles, the forensic community can see how this research applied in the real world. This presentation will impact the forensic community and or humanity by demonstrating how the Illinois Pilot Program was a ground-breaking study on eyewitness identification, and its results should be discussed, analyzed and reviewed for their continuing impact on the field of eyewitness identification. The presenter is the director of the Illinois field study on eyewitness identification, the first field study to examine eyewitness identification procedures in hundreds of lineups involving real crimes, real victims, real witnesses and real suspects. The Illinois pilot program, a year-long study of both photo and live lineup procedures from three different-size law enforcement agencies, grew out recommendations made to address wrongful convictions. The Illinois study is the first field study to collect data on recommended reforms according to the scientific protocol, the first field study to concurrently collect data for comparative purposes on traditional lineups and the first field study to offer a comparative analysis. Two nationally-renowned experts analyzed the data independently. The acceptance of DNA evidence by the judiciary revolutionized the criminal justice system, allowing police and prosecutors to determine with certainty the guilt or innocence of suspects in crimes where the offender left behind probative biological evidence, such as those involving sexual assault. The acceptance of DNA also opened the door to exoneration for the innocent who had been wrongfully convicted prior to the availability of DNA. The first wave of these DNA exonerations shook the faith in and foundations of the criminal justice system, leaving law makers, lawyers and law enforcement to search for the answers to what had gone awry and to seek safeguards to prevent such miscarriages of justice in the future. In attempting to learn lessons from these DNA exonerations, mistaken eyewitness identification emerged as one of the most common contributing factors to wrongful convictions. Since the role of mistaken eyewitness identifications in wrongful convictions came to light, the way in which eyewitness identification is obtained by law enforcement has been called into question. Some answers have been offered, by what has been characterized as the "science" of eyewitness identification, which is based upon experimental research studies of eyewitness identification procedures by social scientists. This body of science has offered, among other things, proposed instructions, proposed standards for picking participants for the lineups and what is referred to as "the sequential, double-blind eyewitness procedure" for lineups. Though the protocols for the sequential double-blind procedure are not yet standardized, this method generally involves showing photos or participants one at a time rather than side-by-side, with the witness required to make a decision on each photo or person before viewing the next one. The "double-blind.

Dose increases should usually occur in increments of 20 mg at intervals of no less than one week. Psychological and Social Aspects of Hepatitis C Treatment--continued those without a history of pre-existing mental illness. For example, in the June 2005 Journal of Hepatology, Martin Schaefer and colleagues reported that patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions who started a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor SSRI ; antidepressant citalopram or Celexa ; before HCV treatment were significantly less likely to develop major depression during the first six months of interferon therapy, compared with those who did not receive the antidepressant 14% vs 64%, respectively ; . A smaller number of patients 2%-16% in various studies ; report new or worsening anxiety during treatment with interferon. Studies suggest that most such patients can complete treatment. Mistler and colleagues concluded that interferon-induced anxiety "appears to be mild and uncommon." Other psychiatric conditions including mania or psychosis ; are rare among patients taking interferon, and there is little data about whether problems during HCV treatment are more common or more severe among patients with pre-existing conditions. But it is clear that these conditions usually abate when interferon is discontinued. People with severe mental illness "can be safely and effectively treated for hepatitis C virus, " the authors concluded, and thus should be offered interferon-based therapy if indicated based on degree of liver disease progression. "[N]europsychiatric side effects are, in some cases, preventable, and, in most cases, treatable, " they continued. "Severe neuropsychiatric side effects due to [interferon] are uncommon and reversible.
